HarbourPilot

Navicom is a New Zealand company providing navigation equipment for marine applications. One of their products is called the HarbourPilot, which allows a qualified pilot from a given port to board a large container vessel with their own navigational system - allowing them to safely and reliably bring the vessel into dock, without the need to work on an unfamiliar navigational system.

Navicom wanted to update the HarbourPilot product to modernise the internal electronics, improve reliability, and reduce the assembly time (and thus cost) per unit, which previously took over a week.

Globex did the entirety of the mechanical design for the new unit, including housings, seals, fasteners, internal layout, external mounting hardware and assembly process. This included working with a range of rigid and flexible materials, with relatively high ingress protection and impact requirements to protect the sensitive electronics in the marine environment.

Capabilities Used

  • Design for injection moulding

  • 3D modelling / CAD design

  • Prototype production

  • Preliminary testing

  • Supplier sourcing and management

The new product met all of Navicom's requirements, passing the required IP and IK tests, and reducing the assembly time to less than an hour.
